- Read all notes from the First Grade Team and ask our students about what they are learning in class.
- Listen to your child read every day for a minimum of 30 minutes.
- Read to your child regularly in English and/or your home language.
- Take your child to the library to check out books.
- Please write your child’s name on their supplies and school clothes.

How you can help. . . .
What to Expect in First Grade
- Students will continue to learn to read and retell stories. They will also describe characters, settings, and major events in a story using key details.
- Students will write opinion, narrative, informative, and explanatory texts using details that describe what happened first, then, next, and last.
- Students will learn the scientific method through the exploration of solids and liquids, plants and animals, and air and weather.
- Students will conduct weekly science experiments using the FOSS science curriculum.
- In math, students will gain a deeper understanding of number sense, place value, geometry, addition and subtraction to 100, and many other math concepts.
- Students will complete enrichment activities across the curriculum. In technology, students will use a variety of digital tools on the iPad to produce and publish writing.
